Dez is a fellow jewelry creator. I met her on Instagram. I was immediately impressed by Dez’s optimism and her encouragement of other jewelry creators – myself included. Oh! And she makes beautiful jewelry too!
Tell us about your jewelry handcrafting.
I create beautiful fashion jewelry. I create jewelry that any person can wear and feel beautiful. I believe in inclusion not exclusion! I try hard to offer a little bit of everything in my shop – not as a business tactic, but as an aim to please the customers whom I call friends.
2. How long have you been making jewelry?
As of October 2019, 4 years.
3. How did you get started?
Wow, that’s a long story but the short version is that life give each of us the opportunity to grow stronger and better to become our best possible selves! I retired in 2014, after 9 major surgeries leaving me disabled for life, I was broken but not beaten. I couldn’t sit home and do nothing, I still had a high schooler to motivate. I had already demonstrated to my son during my illness to never give up by achieving my Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, and teacher of the year award. Therefore once I got ill I couldn’t stop. Thus, Dzdjewelry was established in October 2015. Yet long before 2015, I always had a desire to be in the fashion industry: I wanted to be a fashion designer. Creating jewelry is linked to that industry!
4. Is it your main gig?
Currently, I’m retired, it’s my passion to make others feel beautiful.
5. Do others participate in the process?
My husband helps me in the mailing and packaging. I will sometimes ask his opinion on a style or hue of necklace, bracelet, etc.
I consider jewelry making an art – period. It’s not something that you churn out on a conveyor belt, you’ve got to feel it! I’m inspired by music, art, colors, gemstones and crystals. I adore silver, but I’m starting to pick up on some gold. But that’s the process – it’s always growing, expanding. I love it!
7. What do you love most in regard to your jewelry designing?
Learning new and inspiring ways to create, new mediums to explore, and learning about new artists! I love that Dzdjewelry is the perfect way for me to contribute to my family’s success, be a role model of determination for my son, make my dreams come true of working in the fashion industry and share my story using my love of fashion jewelry.
The limitations of my disability make it difficult for me to attend or complete live jewelry shows.
BijouBeadBoutique: I understand; I have fibromyalgia. Some days, I’m fine. Others, I have to bow to its limitations.
9. Do you have a favorite quote?
Paul Coelho “if you only walk on sunny days you will never reach your destination”
BijouBeadBoutique: I love this!
10. Do you have a website and/or social media sites where people can connect with you?
